## About Canasta

Lay down sets of matching cards until you string seven of a kind together — a canasta worth a flat 500-point bonus — in this two-player take on the rummy classic. You face a single AI across a table dealt from two full decks plus four jokers (108 cards), with eleven cards in each hand to start. On your turn you either draw the top card of the stock or take the single top card of the discard pile, then build melds of three or more cards of the same rank and lay them out. Twos and jokers are wild and can fill in for naturals, but a meld is rejected if its wilds ever outnumber its natural cards or if the naturals are not all the same rank.

Card values follow the standard chart — aces and twos are 20, eights through kings 10, threes through sevens 5, and each joker is worth 50. Reaching seven cards in any one meld adds the 500-point canasta bonus, emptying your hand to go out adds 100, and whatever cards you are still holding when the round ends are subtracted from your score. The round closes the instant the stock runs dry or either hand is emptied, and the higher score wins. Extra-large cards and a clean table layout keep your hand, your melds, and the discard pile readable at a glance.

## How to Play Canasta

Each turn starts with a draw: take the top card of the stock with Draw Card, or tap the discard card to pick up that single top card. Then form melds of three or more cards of the same rank and lay them on the table. A meld that reaches seven cards is a canasta and earns a 500-point bonus. Twos and jokers are wild and can stand in for naturals, but a meld is invalid if the wilds outnumber the naturals or if the naturals are not all the same rank. End your turn by selecting one card and discarding it. The round ends when the stock empties or someone empties their hand; emptying your hand to go out earns a 100-point bonus, and any cards left in hand are deducted from your score.

## Controls

Tap a card in your hand to select it, then tap again to deselect — selected cards lift up. Use the Draw Card button to draw from the stock, or tap the discard card to take it. Once you have drawn, tap Meld to lay down three or more selected cards, or select one card and tap Discard to end your turn. Press Escape or P to pause. Cards and buttons are extra-large for comfortable play.

## Canasta Tips & Strategies

1. Hold matching pairs back so you can extend a meld to seven cards and bank the 500-point canasta bonus.
2. Picking up the discard card is only worth it when that exact rank moves you toward a meld — you only ever get the single top card, not the pile.
3. Wild twos and jokers are flexible, but never load a meld with more wilds than naturals or the game will reject it.
4. Jokers are worth 50 points and aces and twos 20 each — don't strand high-value cards in your hand, because leftovers are subtracted at round end.
5. Emptying your hand to go out adds 100 points, so time it to land while you still lead on the table.

## Frequently Asked Questions

### How do I take a card from the discard pile?

Tap the face-up discard card during the draw step of your turn and it goes straight into your hand — no matching pair or special condition is needed. You take only that single top card, not the whole pile.

### How is scoring calculated in Canasta?

Each card in a meld is worth its face value (aces and twos 20, eights through kings 10, threes through sevens 5, jokers 50). Any meld that reaches seven cards adds a flat 500-point bonus, and emptying your hand to go out adds 100. When the round ends, the value of every card still in your hand is subtracted from your score.

### Is there a difference between a natural canasta and a mixed one?

Not in this version. Any meld of seven or more cards earns the same flat 500-point bonus whether it is built from all natural cards or includes wild twos and jokers.

### Can I play with a partner?

No — this is two-player Canasta, you against a single AI opponent, with no partnership or four-player mode.
